The 63rd most common last name in China. Descendents of Zhou Wu Wangs brother Kang Shu, whom in turn was a descendent of the ancient king Huang Di. Kang Shu was awarded the duke of Wei. His sixth generation descendent, Jing Bo had a son called Shi Shi, who was a judge in the Wei kingdom. The duke of Wei, Zhuang Gong had a younger son, Zhou Yu, who was in charge of the army. Shi Shi warned Zhuang Gong about the danger of Zhou Yu rebelling against him, but was unsuccessful. After Zhuang Gong died, the prince succeeded him and was known as Wei Heng Gong. Zhou Yu indeed rebelled against his brother, killed him and took over his throne. Shi Shis son, Shi Hou participated in the rebellion. Not being popular among his people, Zhou Yu sent Shi Hou to consult Shi Shi on how to become a popular duke. Shi Shi told his son to get the kings endorsement. But in order to see the king, they must go through duke Chen, a favor of the king. Duke of Chen was notified by Shi Shi to seize Zhou Yu and Shi Hou and had them executed. Shi Shi has been hailed as a loyal judge and he was the forefather of the Shis. (Shi means rock).
