The 97[sup]th[/sup] most common last name in China. The original last name of the Hes was Qing. During Chun Qiu period, a grandson of Qi Heng Gong, Qing Ke, began to adopt the last name of Qing and named his son Qing Feng. Qing Feng is often considered as the forefather of the Hes. Qing Feng became a powerful judge in the Qi kingdom, and was in charge of the administration together with another judge called Cui Xu. They brought down the duke of Qi, Zi Ya, and established his Zi Ya's brother, Guang, as the new duke known as Zhuang Gong. Zhuang Gong had an affair with Cui Xus wife and was killed by Cui Xu. Cui Xu thus established Jing Gong as the duke. After this incidence, the administration became discontent with Qing Feng and Cui Xu, and Qing was eventually ousted and fled to the Wu kingdom. The duke of Wu awarded the land of Zhu Fang (east of Jiangshi in Jiangsu) to Qing. During Dong Han Dynasty, the descendents of Qing changed their name to He, to avoid having the same name as king Han An Di (107-126 A.D.). Qing and He both means congratulations.Hometown: Wu of Jiangsu Province.
