The 91st most common last name in China. Descendents of Shao Hao's son Yin, who was made the duke of Yin (north east of Shi in Shanxi). His descendents started to use Yin as their last name. Another origin of Yin was from an official title. The Shang Dynasty installed the Yin position, with duty very similar to that of the prime minister. The first person who held this title was Yi Yin, who helped Shang Tang in establishing the Shang Dynasty. Other famous people who held this position include, Bo Jifu, also known as Yin Jifu. Bo Jifu was a renowned judge during Zhou Xuan Wang's reign. A number of judges who held this position, have descendents who decided to change their last names to Yin.
