The 28th most common last name in China. There are three main origins of the Yu family. 1) The third son of Zhou Wu Wang, Yu Shu, was made the duke of Yu (north west of Wu in Jiangsu). This knigdom was brought to an end by the Wu kingdom during the Chun Qiu period and its people began to bear the last name Yu. 2) During Chun Qiu, there was an judge of the Song kingdom called Yu Chou. His descendents also have the last name Yu. 3) During Tang Dynasty, there was a tribe with the compound last name Chun Yu. They were the descendents of Yan Di, and were awarded the land of ChunYu (An Qiu in Shandong). In 806 A.D., Xian Zhong became the emperor of the Tang Dynasty. Since Xian Zhong's first name is "Chun", the Chun Yu tribe was forced to drop "Chun" and change their name to "Yu" (its a taboo to have the same name as the emperor). The became the forefathers of this third origin of the Yu people.
