The 40th most common last name in China. Descendents of the ancient king Yan Di. Yan Dis grandson, Bo Yi was in charge of the law and regulations. He was also the head of all dukes, during Xia Yus reign. Due to his contribution in fighting the flood, he was given the kingdom of Lu (west of NanYang in HeNan province). The Lus served as dukes through the dynasties of Xia, Shang and Zhou. During the Chun Qiu period, the Lu kingdom was eliminated by the Chu kingdom, and its people began to bear the last name of Lu.
