The 90[sup]th[/sup] most common last name in China. The forefather of the Tang family was Shang Tang of the Shang Dynasty. Shang Tang was also known as Ji, or Tianyi. At that time, Xia Dynastys last king Xia Jie was known for his cruelty. Tang built up his power by allying with the powerful Shen tribe through marrying one of their women. Tang then eliminated Xias allies, Ge, Wei, Gu, and Kunwu one by one. After eleven battles, he was managed to bring the Xia Dynasty to an end. The Shang Dynasty lasted for more than six centuries, before it was destroyed by the Zhou Dynasty (in 1,134 B.C.). Some his descendents adopted Tang as their last name.Tangs ancestor was Huang Di. Huang Di was the father of Xuan Xico. Xuan Xico was the father of Qiaoji. Qiaoji was the father of Di Ku. Du Ku was the father of Qi. Qi was the first tribal leader of Shang. After 14 generations, Tang was born.
