The 20th most common last name in China. There are two main sources. 1) The Luos are the descendents of the ancient tribe who were responsible for knitting nets for the capture of birds (Luo means capturing with net). According to research, the earliest tribe was a subdivision of the Mi tribe during the Shang Dynasty. They shared the same ancestors as Jing and Chu, and they resided in Luo Shan of HeNan. After Zhou Wu Wang eliminated Shang, the Luos were awarded the Luo Zi kingdom, and officially became a kingdom of the Zhou Dynasty. Chu Wu Wang brought the Lou Zi kingdom to an end, during the Chun Qiu period. The descendents bore the last name of Luo. 2) The Luos are the descendents of the legendary inventor of fire creation, Zhu Rong.
