Chinese surname history: Wang

Surname Wang was originated in the present Wukang in Zhejiang Province. Wang means vastness of the ocean. They are the descendents of Wangmang people lived in Wukang about four to five thousand years ago.

In early Xia Dynasty (2,100-1,600 BC), there was a feudal lord kingdom known as Fangfeng. In the Shang Dynasty (c. 16th century-11th century BC), it was renamed the kingdom of Wangmang. Its people took the kingdom name Wang as their surname. That is the surname's origin.

Nevertheless, some say Wang families are the descendents of Zhou Wen Wang (1134-1115 BC) of the Xizhou Dynasty (1134-256 BC). In late Shang Dynasty, Zhou Wen Wang seized the hold of the Gulu Kingdom in Lushan, Henan Province and gave it to his grandson Boqin. After overthrowing the Shang Dynasty, Zhou Wen Wang sent Boqin to defeat 17 allies of the Shang and ordered Boqin to station there. The Gulu Kingdom moved to Shandong from Henan. When the king of Lu Chenggong was in power, his illegitimate son Prince Wang lived in Pingyang. The prince's son Wang Yong took his father's name as his surname, which comes down to the present.

Wang families moved to Anhui Province during the Jian'an reign (AD 196-220) of Dong Han Dynasty (AD 25-220). Most of Wang families have moved to Jiangxi, Guizhou, Fujian and Guangdong provinces and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region after Tang Dynasty (AD 608-907). So far there are about 4.56 million people with the surname of Wang. It is the 57th most common surname in China. Celebrities with the surname include painter Wang Shishen in Yangzhou, in East China's Jiangsu Province.
