The 26[sup]th[/sup] most common last name in China. The Tangs are the descendents of Yao Di. Before he became the emperor, he was awarded the land of Tang (west of Yi in Shanxi). After Yao was appointed emperor, he named his Dynasty, Tang. Yao was a great emperor in ancient history. He gave his throne to Shun, who made Yaos descendents the dukes of Tang. Tang lasted through Xia and Shang, and was eliminated by the Zhou Dynasty, and its people began to bear the last name Tang. During Chun Qiu period, the Tang kingdom was awarded to the family of Ji (north west of Sui Zhou in HuBei province). This kingdom was brought to an end by the Chu kingdom, and its people also have the last name Tang.Hometown: Shi Quan in Shanxi Province.
