The 8[sup]th[/sup] most common last name in China. The Huangs and Zhaos have the same forefather, Shao Hao (2,597-2513 B.C.). Shao Haos mother was Huang E. Huang loved to travel by boat in the daytime and knit at night. One day, Huang met a handsome man called son of Bei Di, in Shangdong. They fell in love and got married. After one year, they gave birth to Shao Hao. After a few generations, Ben Tao became the head of the justice department. Bens son Bo Yi married Yu Shuns youngest daughter and gave birth to Da Lian. Xia Yu awarded the Huang kingdom to Da Lian, and his descendents are known as the Huangs. The Huangs were discriminated upon, during the Xia Dynasty and were called the Huang Yi (barbarians). The situation was improved in the Zhou Dynasty when Yi Yin of the Huang Kingdom became the prime minister of Shang Tang. The Huang Kingdom was recognized by the Zhou Dynasty, but was eliminated in 648 B.C., by Chu, and the descendents began to bear the last name of Huang.
