The 49[sup]th[/sup] most common last name in China. The Yes are the descendents of Mi, with their ancestors from the noble family of the Chu kingdom. During Chu Zhuang Wangs reign, his Left Minister, Shen Yishu, was killed in a battle against the Wu kingdom. Chu Zhao Wang thus awarded Shens son Shen Zhu Liang as the duke of Ye (south of Ye in Henan), known as Ye Gong. Ye Gongs descendents were all awarded dukes, because of his contribution in suppressing the rebellion of Bai Gongs Shen. After the Ye kingdom was brought to an end, its people began to bear the last name of Ye. There was an extended period of time in history when the last name Ye was pronounced She. (Ye means leaves).Hometown: Yang in Henan Province.
