The 88[sup]th[/sup] most common last name in China. There are two main origins to this last name. 1) During the reign of ancient king Huang Di, there was an ancient tribe known as FangLei. The Fangleis were very close to Huang Dis tribe before he became the king. Huang Di married a girl from Fenglei and she gave birth to a son called Qingyang. After Huang Di. A number of the Fangleis also served as judges in Huang Dis administration. The Fangleis later simplified their name to Lei. 2) During Dong Han a foreign tribe called the Jiangs was moved from the west to Fengxiang (Dali in Shaanxi). Among them, there was a sub-tribe called the Leis. After the Nanbei Dynasties, the Leis began to intermarry with the Chinese.
