The 98[sup]th[/sup] most common last name in China. The brother of Zhou Wu Wang, Shu Ying, was awarded the duke of Lai (north east of Shi in Henan). In 538 B.C., the Lai kingdom was destroyed by Chu Ling Wang. Some of its people fled to the neighboring kingdoms of Luo and Fu and changed their name to Luo and Fu. Others migrated north and settled in Da Yan (Yanling in Henan). They adopted the last name of Lai to commemorate their old kingdom.
