Tan is a surname that was named after a kingdom. During the
Zhou Dynasty, there was a Tan Kingdom (west of Zhanqiu in Shandong Province), which was awarded to BoYi. This kingdom was annihilated by the Qi Kingdom in 684 B.C. Its people escaped to the Lu Kingdom and adopted the surname Tan to commemorate their lost kingdom.
Hometown: 40 miles south of Lingbao in Henan.
