The original last name of the Luans was Ji. During the Xi Zhou Dynasty, Tang Shuyus 5th generation descendent Jin Jing was awarded duke in the land of Luan (vicinity of Cheng in Hebei). He had a grandson called Bin. Bins grandson Zhi adopted Luan (name of the land) as their last name. Luan Zhi was the commander in chief of the Jin kingdom, under Jin Wen Gong. In the Battle of Chengpu, Luan Zhi was noted for his contribution in defeating the Chu kingdom, and was made a duke. Luan Zhis grandson Luan Shu was in charge of the administration in the Jin kingdom, making the Luans the most powerful family within the kingdom. After the Chun Qiu period, the Luans began to lose power and Luan Shus grandson, Luan Ying was ousted by other dukes and fled to the Chu kingdom. His descendents are known as the Luans.
