The surname Ou came from the name of a place. During
Qin Chiu Dynasty, Gou Jian the king of Yue eliminated the Wu kingdom and became a superpower. His sixth generation descendent Wu Jiang attacked Qi, hoping to regain the glory once attained by his ancestor. Emperor of Qi sent a messenger to Wu Jiang urging him to attack the Chu kingdom instead for Chu was a big and prosperous kingdom. Even if Wu Jiang would fail to topple Chu, he would certainly gain support from Chus enemies, the Han and Wei kingdoms and thus became a superpower. The messenger further convinced Wu Jiang that it was the golden opportunity to attack Chu because its army was all tied up in the northern part of the country, spreading its military power paper-thin. Wu Jiang was pleased to learn this and turned his army towards Chu instead. Unfortunately, Wu Jiang was badly defeated and was killed in the battle. The Chu army pursued the Yue army, occupying all the territory that Yue had seized from the kingdom of Wu. Wu Jiangs sons divided the Yue kingdom, with his second son Ming Di occupying the south of Ou Yu Mountain in Wu Cheng (Wu Xing in Zhejiang province). The southern part of the mountain was known as Yang, thus his descendents are known as Ou or Ou Yang.
