如果想让自己写的文章更有条理些，可以考虑在需要的时候用the former和the latter（分别表示“前者”和“后者”）。
首先，former和latter都是可以单独使用的：
·One can travel by ship
or plane. Most people choose the former（latter）.
一个人可以乘船或坐飞机去旅行。人们多数选择前者（后者）。]
不过相对来说，两个词在同一句子里使用会更爽：
·Jane and Mary are good
friends; the former is a teacher, the latter is a
nurse.
珍和玛丽是好朋友，前者是老师，后者是护士。
·Of these two men, the
former is dead but the latter is still alive.
这两个人中，前者已死，而后者仍然活着。
考察一个更长的，并且有上下文的句子（初学者建议跳过此句不看）：
·The word “democracy”
may stand for a natural social equality in the body politic or for
a constitutional form of government in which power lies more or
less directly in the people’s hand. The former may be called social
democracy and the latter democratic government.
可以观察到在这个句子最后the latter
democratic government处省略了may be called。也就是说写全了应该是：the latter may be called democratic
government。
用套儿的时候注意以下两点：
1．要确定你谈论的对象只有两个。
2．在确定是中国老师阅卷的时候，the latter后面尽量不要省略，因为老师很可能因为不理解或反应不过来这种表达方法而判你错。一定要记住我上课讲的：当面对我国阅卷人时，一定要将自己的思维水平准确地降到和对方同一档次；并且在句意不受影响的情况下疯狂使用对方在意并且可以理解的句型，以便说明：“看见了没有，我会！”。至于文章的架构和论证的清晰程度，可以暂时忽略。
