虽然在国外有些汉字名会引起误会，但只要注意避免汉字谐音，中国人最好还是起一个中国名，使用洋名的麻烦也不少，比如下面这则在美国流传的打电话的段子（有歧视华人之嫌），就是发生在两个起了洋名姓万的华裔之间，来电话的叫Sam Wan，找妹妹Annie Wan，还有两个兄弟叫Noel Wan、Avery Wan，接线生叫Saw Lee：
Caller : Hello, can I speak to Annie Wan (anyone)? 哈罗，我可以和Annie Wan（听上去像anyone“任何人”）通话吗？
Operator : Yes, you can speak to me.可以你可以和我讲。
Caller : No, I want to speak to Annie Wan (anyone)! 不，我找“任何人”。
Operator : You are talking to someone! Who is this? 你不正在和我讲话吗，请问你叫什么名字？
Caller : I’m Sam Wan (Someone). And I need to talk to Annie Wan (anyone)! It’s urgent. 我是Sam Wan（听上去像“某人”），我要找“任何人”，有急事！
Operator : I know you are someone and you want to talk to anyone! But what’s this urgent matter about? 我知道你是“某人”，也知道你要找“任何人”，有什么急事呢？
Caller : Well… just tell my sister Annie Wan (anyone) that our brother Noel Wan (no one)has involved in an accident. Noel Wan (no one)got injured and now Noel Wan (no one) is being sent to the hospital. Right now, Avery Wan (everyone) is on his way to the hospital. 我嘛，我要告诉我的妹妹“任何人”，哥哥Noel Wan（听上去像“没人”no one）受了伤，“没人”送医院。现在Avery Wan（听上去像“每个人”）正在去医院的路上。
Operator : Look if no one was injured and no one was sent to the hospital, then the accident isn’t an urgen t matter! You may find this hilarious but I don’t have time for this!原来没人受伤，有什么着急的！我没时间和你逗乐子。
Caller : You are so rude! Who are you? 你这是什么态度？你叫什么？
Operator : I’m Saw Lee (Sorry).我叫Saw Lee（听上去像“对不起”，sorry）
Caller : Yes! You should be sorry. Now give me your name!!! 你真应该说对不起，你告诉我你的名字叫什么？！
