The 100th most common last name. During the Shang Dynasty, Shang Zhou (1,154 1,134 B.C.) executed the duke of the Zhou kingdom (Ji Li), being concerned that the Zhou Kingdom was getting too powerful. Ji Lis son Ji Chang took over the dukedom and was a even better duke than his father. Shang Zhou thus found an excuse to imprison Ji Chang. Ji Chang pretended to have lost interest in power and Shang Zhou eventually released him. After returning to his kingdom, Ji Chang united 2/3 of all the kingdoms and was getting ready to rebel against the Shang Dynasty. Unfortunately, Ji Chang died of natural causes. His son succeeded him and was successful in overthrowing the Shang Dynasty and established the Zhou Dynasty. His son was known as Zhou Wu Wang and Ji Chang was given the title of Zhou Wen Wang. Some of the descendents wanted to commemorate Zhou Wen Wang, and adopted Wen as their last name.
