Ji is one of the earliest last names in China. There are two main origins to this last name. 1) The youngest son of Huang Di was Xiao Dian. His original last name was Gongsun. Because he lived next to the river of Ji, his descendents changed their name to Ji. 2) According to the legend, Huang Di had 25 sons, who shared 12 last names. Ji was among the 12 last names. Ancient kings, like Xiao Hao, Zuang Xu, Ku Di, Yao Di, Shun Di, were all descendents of Huang Di. The ancestors of Shang Dynasty , Qi, and the ancestors of Zhou Dynasty, Houji were also descendents of Huang Di. Later on, the Houjis adopted the last name Ji, who established the Zhou Dynasty. During the Zhou Dynasty, 53 of the kingdoms were awarded to the Jis. However, since these people tend to adopt the names of the kingdoms or the first names of their forefathers as their last names, there are very few people with the last name of Ji nowadays
