The 15th most common last name in China. The name Gao came from the last name Jiang. They might be related to Jiang Zi Ya of Xi Zhou. The 6th generation of Qi Tai Gong, Qi Wen has a son who was awarded the land of Gao, known as Gong Zi Gao. Gong Zi Gaos grandson, Xi, was a good friend of Qi Xiang Gongs brother Gong Zi Xiao Bai. Qi Xiang Gong was assassinated in a rebellion created by Gong Sun Wu Zhi. Xi united all the officials to suppress the rebellion and killed Gong Sun Wu Zhi. Gong Zi Xiao Bai became the duke in replacing his brother, and was known as Qi Heng Gong. As a reward, Xi was given his grandfathers name Gao, and awarded the Lu city. The Gao descendents were high-ranking officials in the Qi kingdom. Yu Zhen and Lou tribes of Korea changed their names to Gao, after migrated to China. (Gao means high or tall).
