The 60th most common last name in China. Jiang is one of the oldest last names. According to the legend, Xiao Dian had two sons, Huang Di and Yan Di. Yan Di resided along the Jiang River (south west of Qi Mountain in Shaanxi). His descendents are known as the Jiangs. During the Xia Dynasty, a descendent called Bo Yi was awarded the duke of Lu (west of Nanyang in Henan). Thus descendents of Yan Di are are also known as Lus. According to research, there were 247 last names that came from the Jiangs; they are all descendents of Yan Di, and Lu is only one of them. (Jiang means ginger).
