The 71st most common last name in China. There are two main origins. 1) Descendents of Shang Tang of Shang Dynasty, more than 3000 years ago. Shang Di Yue made his son Ziqi, the duke of Hao (Taiyuan in Shanxi). His descendents are known as the Haos. 2) During the Tang Dynasty, there was a neighboring tribe south of China, who bore the last name Hao. Apparently, these people had no relationship with the first origin alluded to above. The descendents of this tribe also have the last name Hao.
