The 33rd most common last name in China. The Yuans are the descendents of the ancient king Yu Shun. During the Zhou dynasty, Shuns grandson Wu Gong Man was awarded the duke of Chen. The 8th generation descendent, Bo Yuan had a grandson called Tao Tu who adopted the last name, Yuan, to commemorate his grandfather. During Han Zhang Dis reign in the Dong Han Dynasty, Yuans of four generations in the same family held five key positions (equivalent to prime minister). During that time almost everyone wanted to associate with the Yuans. At the end of Xi Jin, because of the Yuans achievements, the name Yuan was considered as one of the four most reputable last name in China together with Wang, Xie and Xiao. Note: it is interesting that there were three Yuans who proclaimed themselves kings in the history of China. (Yuan means a robe).
