Origin of Dong*, Tong*
The 29[sup]th[/sup] most common last name in China. There are two main origins of this last name. 1) During Shuns reign, there was a person called Dong Fu who was a brilliant dragon trainer. His forefather was Zhuan Xu. Shun received a few dragons as gift and handed them to Dong Fu for training, giving him the official title of a Dragon Trainer. Dong Fu devoted a lot of time in training the dragons, teaching them all kinds of dances. Shun was very pleased and made Dong Fu a duke (his kingdom was around Tao in Shandong), and also gave him the last name of Dong. Dong Fu has been regarded as the forefather of the Dong family. 2) The second origin of the last name was named after an official title. During Chun Qiu, there was an official called Zhou Xin, who has two sons in the Jin kingdom serving as "Dong Shi" (in charge of recording history; Dong Shi means comprehension of history). Their descendents held the position in Jin kingdom for generations, and eventually assumed the last name of Dong.Hometown: Lan Zhou, Gong Chang, and Qin Zhou of Gan Su Province.
