The 54th most common last name in China. There are two main sources of this last name. 1) From the Dai kingdom (east of Mingquan in Henan, that was awarded to the Ji family. The Dais were the royal family of the Zhou Dynasty. During Chun Qiu, the Dai kingdom was conquered by their strong neighbor, the Song kingdom. After that, its people began to bear the last name Dai. 2) Descendents of Song Dai Gong, the 11th duke of the Song kingdom. Their forefather was Shang Tang, and their immediate ancestor was Wei Zi Qi of the Zhou Dynasty. He was the duke of Song for 34 years (799-766 B.C.), experiencing big events like, the rebellion of the Chuan Rong which killed Zhou You Wang, and establishing of the Qin kingdom, etc. Some of his descendents took the first name of Song Dai Gong, and named themselves the Dais. There are 18 strokes in the Chinese character of Dai, thus Dai is also known as the name of 18 strokes. (Dai means wear).
