The 99th most common last name in China. This name originated from the last name Ji. During the latter part of the Zhou Dynasty, there was a notorious king called Li Wang, who was known for his cruelty. As a result, a rebellion from the people ousted the king. A descendent of the royal family known as Jie He, the duke of Gong (Hui in Henan) was a righteous man who was loved by his people. Jie He was also known as Gong He. After the king was ousted, the people wanted Gong He to be in charge of the kingdom. Gong He ruled for fourteen years until Li Wang's son was old enough to be king. Gong thus handed his power back to this young king, Zhou Xuan Wang, and returned to his own kingdom of Gong. The Gong kingdom persisted until the Chun Qiu period, and its people began to bear the last name Gong.
